To see performances of the kids go to http://galenaband.com/ and click on videos. They are much better than anything we could do.
Moonrise in Nevada.
The first competition was held the 6th up at McQueen High School. The band did alright but was gone the entire day. They had played at the football game the night before which was Homecoming. I asked Rachel if she was going to homecoming and she said she wasn't interested. Strangely enough, at this high school homecoming is not a formal dance. It's a girl-ask-guy dance and then the two dress in costume to match each other. She said she wasn't sure how the competition would go on Saturday and didn't want to commit to anything.
A peak behind the scenes of band competitions.
"Oh, you're taking pictures?"
The fearless leader, Mr. Sady.
Sure enough, the competition day ran long and Rachel and Nathan arrived home about 7:40, with her friend Eli. As they walked through the door Eli said, "Hey Sister Lindh, can Rachel and I go to homecoming together?" To which I replied, "You mean that dance that starts in 20 minutes? Sure, why not?" One hour later Rachel was showered, we had them in semi-matching outfits, fed and at the dance. Eli had no clothes but the ones he had worn to the band competition that had started at 9 that morning, which wasn't a lot to work with. White shirts and matching ties was the best we could do.
Cute couple.
Dinner at McDonald's. The best two dollar burger ever, according to sixteen year olds. (It's a McChicken stuffed inside a McDouble. Not sure what the cholesterol count is like but they're young, right?)
There was another couple that they met up with at the dance. But at 10:20 there was a knock at the door. I opened it to find Bonny and Porter standing there, alone. "Hey guys, what's up?" "The dance was getting boring and the grinding really annoying so we thought we'd come hang out at your place." "Where are Rae and Eli?" "Oh, coming." Rachel and Eli were a few minutes behind the other two and the four of them hung out watching movies and baking cookies until parents picked up at about 11:30. They had a good time in all but I have to say it was a rather rushed (and little anti-climatic) first homecoming dance.
Performance of Champions (POC)is the band competition that Galena High school hosts. It was held the 13th of October and I got to volunteer to help by manning the first aid station from 3 to 7. Only one girl fainted and I was not needed for anything else so I mostly sat and studied. Our ward had their Harvest Festival that same night that started at 6. Jason took the five youngest to that event. We had volunteered to bring a salad and some dessert to that function so Jason did a great job of putting together broccoli salad and cut up the two pans of brownies we made. Earlier that morning two pans of brownies were made to support the bake sale at the POC.
Darik had another soccer game that day at 11 that Jason took him to while I stayed home making brownies and studying. He also took Darik to get new lenses for his glasses. It's been five months since his new ones but we needed to see his ophthamologist for other reasons, the really red eyes, and his prescription has changed. The new lenses should be here any day.
The 20th Rachel and Nathan had another competition, Darik had a soccer game, Sarah attended a birthday party, and Anna had a performance with her dance class at a craft fair. It was a busy Saturday as we made sure everyone got where they needed to be. Darik's team tied and Sarah had a good time at the party. Anna performed well and Rachel and Nathan competed well but did not make finals. That night there was a Stake Dance scheduled but none of the kids nor their friends felt like going so instead they hung out at our house and watched movies and baked cookies and ate popcorn. Got to bead at 12. So glad for the Sabbath day to rest and recover from our week.
